The Dos and Don'ts of Blackhead Removal: Tips from Dr Bardou

Don't damage your skin in pursuit of clear pores - follow these proven methods instead.

Simon Orrey | 15 July 2023

We often hear from patients who are frustrated with blackheads. While it's understandable to want to remove them quickly, some methods can actually do more harm than good. Here's what you should and shouldn't do when it comes to blackhead removal:

DON'T squeeze or pop blackheads:

This is a common method that can cause significant damage to the skin. Squeezing or popping blackheads can result in inflammation, scarring, and even infection.

DON'T use harsh scrubs or exfoliants:

While exfoliation can be helpful in removing dead skin cells and debris, using harsh scrubs or exfoliants can damage the skin's natural barrier and cause irritation. This can lead to more blackheads in the long run.

DO use a salicylic acid-based cleanser:

Salicylic acid is a gentle yet effective ingredient that can help clear blackheads. It works by dissolving the oil and debris that clog pores, making them easier to remove. A cleanser containing polyhydroxy acid is a good alternative if you have very sensitive skin.

DO use retinoids:

Retinoids, which are derivatives of vitamin A, can help regulate skin cell turnover and prevent the formation of blackheads. They can also improve skin texture and tone. It's important to consult with a dermatologist before starting a retinoid treatment, as they come in various strengths.

DO consult with a dermatologist:

If your blackheads are persistent and not responding to at-home treatments, consider seeing a dermatologist for more advanced treatment options.

Remember, it's important to prioritize safe and effective methods for removing blackheads. Avoid harmful methods like squeezing and harsh exfoliating and opt for gentle and clinically-proven ingredients and treatments.
